The Effect of Olive Leaf Extract

By reducing the damage to brain neurons, olive leaf extract seems to be able to help treat conditions such as dementia and mental decline.

Neuron Protection

In 2010, a review of various studies that had focused on the benefits of oleuropein of olive leaf extract, took place. The review concluded that the antioxidant properties of oleuropein can help prevent or slow down cognitive disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. (1)

Another 2014 review found that the antioxidant components of the olive leaf extract help prevent damage or loss of dopamine neurons associated with Parkinson’s disease. Oleuropein appears to have neuroprotective activity and protects against Alzheimer’s disease. (2)

A 2018 study, also showed that olive leaf extract protects against neuro-degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. (3)

Cognitive Performance

Olive leaf extract can inhibit pro-inflammatory compounds, lipid peroxidation and the cognitive decline induced by oxidative stress. (4)

In animal models in which increased amounts of lead had been accumulated, a study was done to determine if and to what extent olive leaf extract could help them recover. The extract reduced the damage to the neurons and capillaries of their cerebral cortex, reduced the oxidative damage, increased the levels of antioxidant enzymes and improved their overall brain function. (5)

Regular use of the olive leaf extract has been prescribed for people with strokes or other acute brain injuries, since the ability of its compounds to kill free radicals can reduce oxidative stress and may help improve cognitive performance. (6)
