The Effect of Olive Leaf Extract
Every year about 10% of our bone mass is renewed through normal mechanisms. The remodeling process is governed by three types of bone cells, (a) Osteoblasts responsible for bone formation, (b) Osteoclasts responsible for bone resorption and (c) Osteocytes as mediators of bone remodeling.
Osteoporosis is a malfunction of bone resorption, where the rate of bone resorption is greater than that of bone formation, resulting in pure bone loss. The main cause of osteoporosis is the decline in some hormones due to age, but the roles of inflammation and oxidative stress are also recognized as causes in its pathogenesis. (1)
A 2010 study showed that oleuropein, a polyphenol abundant in olive leaves, helps preserve bone marrow. (2)
Findings from another study in 2011 suggest that oleuropein and hydroxytyrosol polyphenols in olive leaves can be used as effective therapies in the treatment of osteoporosis symptoms because they can have critical effects on bone formation and maintenance. (3)
Subsequently, additional studies were performed, the results of which were collected from a 2016 review. The review observed that olive compounds such as hydroxytyrosol, tyrosol and oleuropein have anti-inflammatory action. This action, as the relevant experiments showed, helped to reduce joint inflammation pain and also helped increase calcium absorption by bones. (4)
In the clinical trials, olive polyphenols helped to prevent the decline in patients’ bone mineral density. For this reason, researchers have pointed out and emphasized that the inclusion of olive polyphenols in a diet may help prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.(4)
